App Reviews

  • Can’t download and read offline

I subscribe to the magazine but can no longer download and read off line with this app. Unbelievable. Been a subscriber for 25 years, can barely stomach the leftward tack of magazine over the last 10 years (can you write just one article a month that doesn’t mention climate change?) and now this. Buh bye.
  • A joke compared to the previous app

I’ve been a long time subscriber as were my parents. This is not a replacement for the print version (missing lots of content) and can only be used online. What were they thinking? The previous app was orders of magnitude better.
  • Disappointing Update

I’ve been a subscriber for years. The print edition still comes to my home every month. I’ve used the app for some time now as well and really enjoyed the “enhanced” experience. It was so nice to take my iPad along with me for travel and enjoy reading the magazines while off line. All that has changed now- the app really seems more of a browser than anything else. I can’t save content for offline reading, I don’t enjoy the new format, and I’m so very disappointed in this update. Please fix this, Nat Geo!

I’ve been subscribing for years through an iTunes subsection and now all of a sudden the two are not linked. All archived purchases that I had are gone. Did apple rip me off?

They should have learned from the new coke debacle. National geographic had a fantastic app and ruined it. Completely. You can no longer read the magazines from this app. I will no longer subscribe, as physical magazines do not make sense for me, and this app is garbage.
  • What were you guys thinking?

This app update is terrible. Half of reason i used the app was because it added to the magazine experience. It was awesome seeing some of the stills turned animated or being able to find out more about the pictures, not to mention how slick the articles were but this reduces what made this app special to a feed. And on top of that still no support for the new iPad Pros?
  • The only reason I liked this app

The only reason I liked this app was the ability to download issues to read while away from internet. I subscribed via iTunes like 5 years ago (had a print subscription for a long time prior but real life prevents most people from accumulating and saving hundreds of thousands of pages) and this app had always been the absolute best mobile magazine experience until now. The content of course is top notch but maybe this change was motivated by the cut apple takes from sales through their store? Anyhow it’s not worth subscribing to if it’s a digital magazine experience you’re after. Now we lose all of our back issue access? Big big mistake. This is how you lose a fan base. Another sad day in the decline of modern publications.
  • Bring back the old model.

If I wanted a website, I would go to the NatGeo website. I specifically subscribed to be able to access and download virtual copies of the magazine. If this is not addressed, I will be cancelling my subscription.

The app looses its main functionality to me when I can’t download issues for when I’m on planes (which is 4x a week)
  • What happened to the Magazine Format?

National Geographic staff, are you not reading these terrible reviews? Numerous negative comments about your update and yet not one comment from your staff. It appears to me that you are not interested in retaining those who subscribe to the digital magazine. I was paying each month for a magazine format that I could download and save my page. When done, I could archive the magazine to save space on my I-Pad. Now the new format leaves one to simply scroll and scroll through the article, with no way of saving where you are. The new online version is an incomplete version of your paper copy, whereas before the online version was the same format (and a little more) as the paper version. Please bring back the original format of your magazine.
