Tap the Cat App Description

Start your child on their reading journey with Tap the Cat. Suitable for 4-6 year olds, each of the 9 playful activities builds and reinforces a different literacy skill – from letter sounds, rhyming words and phonics to colouring, vocabulary, speaking and handwriting. Tap the Cat appeals to your child’s natural sense of play with a wide variety of different activities. Your child can match spaceship letters, drag letters to make words, hop a rabbit home, match words to pictures, build their vocabulary and paint pictures. Each activity will keep them motivated and engaged with colourful animations, catchy music, fun sound effects and reward screens. With an emphasis on touch, Tap the Cat helps build the fine motor skills needed for handwriting as your child writes letters and words using correct letter formation, as well as colouring in pictures. Featuring voice feedback interactivity, Tap the Cat helps boost your child’s word pronunciation skills, as they record their own voice, and then play back what they said! Tap the Cat is brought to you by the makers of popular educational website Reading Eggs – a team of educators with more than 20 years’ experience in early childhood education, who believe learning to read should be fun, motivating, and full of success. Features - Suitable for children aged 4 – 6. - Includes 9 activities, playable at 2 levels of difficulty. - Develops key early literacy skills including upper and lower case letters, rhyming, phonics, comprehension, encoding words, vocabulary, sight words and reading a book. - Helps build essential motor skills through touch-based activities including handwriting, painting, and arranging letters to form a word. - Your child can record and play back their own voice to practice word pronunciation. - An extra special feature allows your child to create an e-book of all their completed drawings and recordings. My 4 year old can't play this because all of the words are in lowercase and he only knows uppercase. This is a huge issue, and we are just going to delete the game because he gets frustrated. I'm not sure why a game like this wouldn't have the option to choose either upper or lowercase.

I really like this programs I have three children ages 3, 4 and 6 and they all use this program. I have one major complaint that makes me give it only 3 stars. In the writing portion of this app it does not use the letters for basic writing therefore teaching children to write the wrong way. When they enter school they will have to unlearn the bad habits. If the writing area was improved I would give it 5 stars.

My two eldest kiddos (soon-to-be 5 and 2.5) love this game! My soon-to-be 5 year old has trouble with her hearing and speech and therefore has a lot of trouble with most reading/alphabet type games. But these games are very clear and she is making great progress in her reading and letter sounds. Between this and the reading eggs program on the computer, I have no doubt she will be reading and sounding out words soon! And my 2.5 year old even enjoys the game too. He excels in the matching and letter sounds. I have noticed a difference in his speech clarity even in just the few days that we have had it. But the best part of this game is that it is not extremely obnoxious. The background music, the speakers and the sound effects are not severely annoying which makes it easier for the kids to play because I am not constantly telling them to turn it down. The only things I would change about this program right now would be 1) to have more levels like reading eggs on the computer does. 2) to make it easier to change users without going into the settings of the game. A main menu screen with all the user names would be easier. As of right now, my kiddos have a hard time with switching users without accidentally changing the language or whatever. But all in all, this is a great app. Worth the money. :)

This app is pretty mediocre at best. I was hoping for more. My 5 year old (not particularly advanced in reading) did almost the whole thing in under 30 minutes. Level-wise, the activities are very disjointed. Some of it would be appropriate for my 3yo prereader, but other parts seemed above K level. It doesn't seem to work properly either. There are places that say "tap to hear the word/sentence" or "tap to play back" and none of those parts work. (and no it's not a volume issue. We can hear the background music fine.)
