This app used to be brilliant. I have used it on and off for a year and now, suddenly, you cannot learn new words or unlock anything beyond level 1 without paying an inflated subscription fee? I understand the developers need to make money, but they should do that by charging a subscription for the extras - not the basics which always used to be free. Terrible way to treat existing customers of the app.

I love having this app because I do it daily well I try and it does help plus the decoration it’s very pretty I do recommend this for other people that want to learn a new language but can't pay for things like classes or maybe don't have time to make it all the way to there just download this app and promise you will have your tutor with you everywhere you go.
  • Fun yes, Practical no

The app is fun and I do like the method of learning. You’re not bombarded with too many words/phrases in a lesson and there’s a lot of repetition. With that being said, I think the progression is too slow and this is probably better suited for children. I’ve been doing this daily for 15-30 minutes for the last several months and there’s no momentum. I keep getting reviews of “Auf Weidersehen”, “Bitte”, “Hallo”, “Wie heist du” and “banane”. I understand simple greetings and useful; but I’ve logged into many hours. Come on, challenge me! I need to know Practical phrases; such as, “Can I have the bill”; “I would like a cold beer”; “would you point to the restroom”. I don’t need to know, “Du bist ein genie!” Which translates to “you are a genius!”

Memrise uses spaced repetition in order to help you memorize a word or phrase, as well as it has an option for mnemonics, which I think is great. I love memrise and I’ve been using it for 2 years with pro membership for learning languages. Nonetheless, there are some things I really hate. For example, some people cheat making ridiculous amounts of points and that makes me feel mad because the points I make I put the effort and time for them. So I think it’ll be a good idea to have limited amounts of points you can make in a day, something reasonable and human-capable. Another issue I have is I’m a pro member and I can’t even review a general course with pronunciation, learn with locals, and listening skills. That was something that was available before and not anymore. It only works with individual lessons. So, why paying a membership if I can’t even make use of those features in a broader way? When I review words in the website, it gives me +150 points per word/phrase whereas in the phone it only gives me +5, and I think that’s ridiculous. It should be even, doesn’t it? A year ago I gave 5 stars to the app, but now I’ll give it just 4 because there are things to improve.

This app is pretty good but its not the best :/ Its constantly begging me to pay and plus I cant get new words because it wants me to pay a subscription. Im fine having the others locked but I just want learn a language the least you could let me do is learn new words

Why can’t we access other courses from the app anymore? (Such as maths or science, or user created language sets). They’re accessible with pc but who rly uses Memrise on the computer like... its tedious 🤧
