App Reviews

  • Good even for intermediate learner

    By ME frin DC, USA
I am an intermediate French learner. I was at first a little reluctant to pay extra for a subscription. But the little colloquial phrases I learned in one week quickly proved to be well worth the money. I would give it a 5 star if there’s a way to test yourself to a more advance level, especially in the grammar. But I had to go through the levels, which unfortunately is painfully slow. In the vocabulary, you can go to the website and opt out easy words. You cannot do the same for grammar. After several days I am still forced to conjugate the present indicative.
  • Useless if not paid

It WAS a GREAT tool for learning! But... I don’t know if this is supposed to happen, but, if so, it is very frustrating. I understand not being able to have certain skills like “Learn with Locals” since I’m not paying. However, I do believe it is a bit rude to make it to where I cannot learn even new words without paying for a membership. Every time I click “Learn New Words” it will not allow me to learn without paying for a membership. Not all of us can afford a membership. Certain features I understand not having, but being unable to do anything except review does get very annoying. It used to not have this issue, but now it is all too much a reality. Memrise WAS wayyy better than Duolingo at CERTAIN languages (such as Japanese and Korean). But now, it has lost its appeal. I would rather have ads using Duolingo than not be able to learn anything using Memrise.
  • Great app

Really helpful in learning Brazilian Portuguese. Coming from someone who is already trilingual, this is a great way to learn a new language!

  • Amazing, best app... then one tweak, and it’s awful.

Ive been using this app for more than a year every day. I have absolutely LOVED it. I’m not kidding, I learned and retained more in three weeks, than I did in more than a year with the Babbel app. But then... Out of nowhere, they changed how one key puzzle type works and all of a sudden the whole system falls apart and retaining anything takes way longer, and it’s no longer a fun game, and instead now a miserable pop quiz. It used to be that word jumbles, when sorted correctly, would automatically mark themselves as correct. This let you move words around and play with their order to understand them and how they relate to each other. It also meant you looked at the words for a lot longer and thought about them more critically. The new behavior changes this, entirely removing the sorting and puzzle solving, in favor of making you sort the words correctly on the first try without and feedback along the way. You will absolutely get every single word jumble wrong for a very long time, and it will take you a very long time to pick up on the mistakes you’re making again and again. It’s really, really not fun. It’s also not effective for helping you retain information or learn language patterns. It’s way more like something from Babbel’s seriously garbage playbook, than something from Memrise’s historically fun and engaging playbook. With more than a year of experience with it, I know how well it was working, and now within just a few weeks of the change, I can tell what a catastrophe it is for the learning process. I went from mastering a few ‘difficult words’ in each course, to failing to recall even a single phrase from the newest course since the update. This app deserves 5 stars. It’s what I’d have given it last month before the update. But, it’s crippled now, and they’re not responding to support requests anymore. Don’t buy it until they fix this. Try Duolingo instead; it’s not as effective, but at least you’ll get to have some fun, and at least you’ll learn some stuff, albeit more slowly than you would have pre-Memrise update. If they ever fix it, I’ll update my review. Until then, this is the most disappointing update to a beloved app I have ever experienced.
  • Stopped Working

I want to love this app, I really do. I love the interface and the way it teaches words and phrases. However, I am learning Swedish 1, I have learned 105 words and it won’t let me go any farther. I can’t learn new words. This app is cute but as a high school student I can’t pay $100 for this app. Could you please fix this problem of it being stuck? I would actually like to use the app.

So far so good honestly, it doesn’t feel like the app is pressuring me but encouraging me to continue to memorize the words I’m learning
